Working with health and beauty and this funny phrase keeps being thrown around, yet when I sit down and try an get a simple explanation all I get this wack load of technical jargon that get me feeling even more lost that I was before.

And simply put how can we worry about something we don't understand? Or even begin to think why we need to do anything about protecting ourselves from it?

So this is where I come in. Here to shed some light on this interesting topic.

Free Radicals :/ what???

What is a free radical?

An atom or group of atoms that has at least one unpaired electron and is therefore unstable and highly reactive.

Free radicals can damage cells and are believed to accelerate the progression of cancer, cardiovascular disease, accelerte aging and age-related diseases.

What are the causes of free radicals?

Free radicals are produced in the body upon exposure to stress, cigarette smoke, alcohol, toxins found in personal care products, pesticides in foods, radiation from the sun, viruses, germs or fungi etc.

WHAT is it i just said... well its true. So many things can cause free Radicals including the products you are using on your face, skin and body.

"WOW PANIC MODE HAS SET IN..."

Panic not because Antioxidants protect cells from damage caused by unstable molecules known as free radicals.

Now the sigh of relief ...

Ok so things we cant avoid produce these free radicals but there is hope for us yet.

O no wait we back at square one... Now what are Antioxidants? :/

What is an antioxidant in layman's terms?

The Good news is that they are found in our diet (for example, in vitamins) or formed inside our body (like enzymes), antioxidants can protect us from the damaging effects of free radicals. The best way to combat free radicals is to have a diet of fresh fruits and vegetables, red wine, and green tea.

WOW Sounds simple enough! but is it that simple?

Now I guess most of you reading this are now thinking RED WINE ... No problem. But remember that its not the solution to simply drink 2 bottles a day because the alcohol would just be producing more so you would probably be worse off.

SO SIMPLY PUT .. WHAT MAKES US OLD?

The Mediterranean diet is high in antioxidants, which are a key component of many plant foods that help slow down the process of oxidation (when your body's cells burn oxygen). This slowing decreases the amount of free radicals, or unstable molecules, that cause damage to your cells, tissues, and DNA.

Reflecting on your everyday there are simple things you can do to look and feel better

Here are a few small changes you can make:

Healthy Daily changes

Drink healthy choices with added antioxidants instead of fizzy drinks and make this a habit. Small changes make a huge difference

The most common antioxidants include vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E and carotenoids, including beta-carotene, lycopene and lutein. Fruits, vegetables, green tea, dark chocolate and more.

Drink more water and eat more fruit and vegetables
