Every morning, rain or shine, sick or healthy, at home or on vacation for the last 4 months...I have done the same thing: drink a glass of warm water with a lemon right after I wake up. I read about this tip several months ago and I've been hooked on it ever since.

Freshly-squeezed lemon juice mixed with warm water, often taken first thing in the morning in place of tea or coffee, has become more than just a drink. It's a fashionably healthy lifestyle choice, fitting right in between the yoga sessions and kale smoothies. And people are knocking it back faster than their morning vitamin pill.

So what exactly kick started the citrus water cult? Lemon and H20 isn’t exactly a new combination, of course: the earliest reference to lemonade is thought to date back to Ancient Egypt. But in terms of the current craze, the citrus squeezer can be pointed firmly at celebrities.

But fans of the drink aren't all looking to only lose weight. Lemon-water lovers (many of whom, thankfully, do actually eat food alongside) claim that the drink is an unbeatably refreshing and healthy way to start the day, capable of doing everything from banishing wrinkles to aiding digestion and reducing anxiety. Well at least I do.

It's a good thing to drink something as soon as you get up because the body can easily become dehydrated overnight . A glass of water is a good idea and if a slice of lemon makes it taste better, that's fine. But it offers no magic or medicinal health benefits.

In fact, if you do decide to incorporate lemon water into your routine, there's one health risk to be very careful of: all that acid can be bad for your teeth. “Remember to rinse your mouth out well after drinking and hold off on brushing your teeth for at least 20 minutes afterwards to avoid enamel erosion as well as use a peroxide free toothpaste.
